159. Israeli Brevet 1200 2014

Hello,

This post aggregates information and details about the Israeli Brevet 1200 of 2014 that will start on 28/Oct/2014.

This is a "live" post, that will continue to be updated until the beginning of the brevet.
It will include information and links to help riders pass the brevet successfully.
Last Update: 19/Oct/2014.
Registration is now open!
Updated route is published.

This post is in English, for anyone who is not fluent in Hebrew.
Israeli riders, please refer to the Hebrew version.

In the 2014 season there will be a 1200 km brevet in Israel for the first time ever.
It is the longest brevet in Israel to date.
We've had a 1000 km brevet twice in the past, and there is a brevet series every year since 2006 (except 2008.)

For ISR multi-continent chasers - This brevet is in Asia! :-)

All ACP and LRM rules apply in this brevet.
Please refer to the 2014 season Brevet Series post for general information about the brevets in Israel.

Registration:

Registration started on 1 January 2014.
The field is limited to 49 riders.

On 1 April 2014 the start list will be re-sorted, and riders that rode a brevet in Israel before August 2013 will be at the top of the registration list (there are about 10 such riders. Some of them rode more than one brevet in Israel in the past.)
From 1 April 2014, the start list is sorted by the time of registration.

Like all brevets in Israel - There are no registration fees of any kind!
A rider that will finish the brevet successfully could ask to be registered and homologated by the LRM.
Handling fees for LRM registration are 40 NIS (about 11 USD, 8 EUR, 7 GBP) per rider.
Handling fees are to be paid within 48 hours after the successful finish.

Registration times for a support car (that you can meet at the controls) are the same as for the riders.
There are no registration fees for a support car.

After a successful finish, there is an option to purchase a medal of the LRM.
Cost of the medal is 40 NIS (about 11 USD, 8 EUR, 7 GBP), in addition to the handling fees above.
Medal fees are to be paid within 48 hours after a successful finish.

FAQs:

1) Official Information about the ride:

This blog post is the official place to get information about the ride.
If official information will be posted in some other web page (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) then this page will link to it.

2) Flight to Israel:

The Tel Aviv Airport code is TLV.
It is about 20 km from central Tel Aviv.

Easiest way would be to take a taxi (on your left as you exit the arrivals hall.) Cost is about 165 NIS plus 5-20 NIS depending on the size and number of bags.

Cheaper would be to take the train to Central Tel Aviv train station, and either a local taxi, or a bus.
Train ticket is 15 NIS one way. Local Tel Aviv taxi could cost about 40-60 NIS (metered,) and bus is about 15 NIS (about 7 NIS for a 1 person ticket, and another ticket for a large bag.)

Assembled bikes cannot go on local (urban areas) buses.
Assembled bikes go for free on inter-city buses.
Assembled bikes go for free on the train during off-peak hours.

3) Tel Aviv Sleeping Options:

Tel Aviv has a full range of accommodation options.
Hotels are most expensive.
Cheaper are boutique hotels.
Cheaper are single rooms at hostels.
Cheaper are dorm rooms at hostels.
Free are services like couchsurfing or warmshowers...

There are also many Airbnb places in Tel Aviv. On last count, more than 20 had a vacancy less than 1 km from the start/finish.

There are quite a few convenience stores that are open 24/7 in Tel Aviv, so no problem getting groceries and food.

The ride starts and finishes where the Yarkon River meets the Mediterranean Sea, near the Tel Aviv Port (not the Old Port of Jaffa.)
Around N32.1035743 E34.7770494
Tel Aviv is flat, so it doesn't really matter where you sleep. The northern part, towards the Yarkon River is a little more quiet, and it gets busier as you move southwards towards the center.

4) Visiting Israel:

If you have never been to Israel, and have some time to spare, I would recommend visiting these places as well: Sea of Galilee, Haifa (and the Bahai Gardens), Nazareth, Jerusalem.
The Brevet will take you to the Dead Sea, Eilat, and the Red Sea.

As noted above: Bikes go free on the bus and train, so you could take your bike and ride around these places, but I wouldn't recommend riding in the big towns if you're not familiar with "Mediterranean Driving" (if you know what I mean... ;-) )

5) Desert Section:

There is a 90 km section on the Negev Desert. We plan to have 2 places in this section that will provide water for free. Riding with 2 standard bottles (mid size, at least 600 cc each) should suffice.

The Brevet will do that section after the 2nd night.
We would be happy if everybody would leave together in the early morning hours.
But if you want to rush it, and not wait for the other riders - Know that it is possible to go unsupported through that desert section. 3 liters of water should be enough.

To make things clear: As this is an official brevet, Everybody is entitled to ride in their own pace!

The brevet route goes through many petrol stations with convenience stores that are open 24/7.
Except for the area south of Mitzpe Ramon.
There is one restaurant there, which will be open when you go through it (both times.)

6) Route, Climbing:

The ride has some notable climbs, and also long flat sections.
Some of the notable climbs:
From the Dead Sea: from minus 350 meters below sea level, to plus 330 above sea level, in 16 km
Paran: about 10% for 1 km.
Climbing out of Eilat towards Ovda: 5% about 800 meters ascent, in about 18 km

A long part of the ride, especially the start and the finish will be flat.

7) Sleeping Place During the Brevet:

There is one sleeping place where we will be staying for 3 nights. It is planned to be in Sde Boker.
There are numerous options to sleep there (apart from the general sleeping that will be supplied to all riders who'd want to secure a bed,) and you could have a B&B with your SO. :-)
There are several hiking trails around Sde Boker that can be explored while you will be riding.

There is a petrol station near the sleeping place with a convenience store which is open 24/7.
There are also a bike shop and a grocery store that open during normal business hours.

8) GPS File(s):

There will be a GPS file with a track and waypoints for controls. No route.
(You could create the route yourself, as I don't know what kind of map you'll have on your GPS.)
For clarification: Waypoints are place markers. Track is a "dumb" line. Route is a "smart" line between points that supports turn-by-turn-navigation.

There will also be another gps file with waypoints at places that are open 24/7.

9) Jersey:

We don't plan on making an event jersey, to keep costs low.

10) Pre-ride meetup:

I couldn't find a place to host us for free.
We might all go to a restaurant, and each will pay for their food and drinks, and so we'll have a private space for ourselves.
I will contact restaurants a few months before the start.
There is no obligation to participate in this pre-ride meetup.

11) Helmet:
The use of a helmet will not be enforced by the organizers.
That said, as in the PBP: It is highly recommended to wear an approved helmet throughout the event.

12) Aerobar:

As in the PBP: Tri-bars and all forms of extended bars are forbidden.

13) Payment Options:

All payments will be made once in Israel.
Payments for the accommodations and the bag-drop services are to be paid before the ride.
Registration and medal fees are to be paid only after a successful finish.

We expect fairness, and if you realize you cannot ride - Please contact us as soon as you can, and we'll remove you from the list, so another rider could be elevated from the waiting list.

With the nature of the payments (being made right before the ride for the logistics, or after a successful finish for the registration with the LRM) - there are no refunds of any kind.

14) Charging and Electricity:

The sleep area will have electricity so you could charge your devices (mobile phone, gps, lights, etc.) while you rest.

A few standard usb, mini-usb and micro-usb cables will be available, but it is recommended that you will have your own chargers in your drop-bag.
Europlug is compatible in Israel.

15) Online Rider Tracking:

It is planned to have some way of tracking riders in real time, as they progress through the controls.
An example can be seen here.

16) Registration Process:

By the time you'll read this - Registration will already be open.
Registration is done by email.
You need to email the official Israeli Randonneurs email address which can be found at the relevant ACP page.
We'll take it from there.

If you want to reserve a place - Send an email with minimum details, like: name, gender, country, and whether you want to secure a bed.
You'll need to fill the rest of the details by April 2014.

In order to complete your registration you'll need to supply these details:
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Gender M/F
  • Country
  • Special bike? yes/no
  • Want bed? yes/no
  • If no bed, want bag drop? yes/no
  • No bed and no bag drop? yes/no
  • Want medal? yes/no
  • If want medal, then supply postal address
  • Phone number
  • Phone number in Israel (if known)
  • ACP Club Code and ACP Club Name (We can help with that.)
  • Any other comments/notes/questions

You should receive a confirmation email. Both for the preliminary email, and the one with all the details, specifying that you are fully registered.
If you have not received the confirmation email within 48 hours - Please contact us again, or leave a comment here.

17) Organizers Ride:

The organizers ride is held exactly one week before the official ride, starting on 21/Oct/2014.
If you prefer to ride on that date (e.g. due to Halloween, or whatever reason,) then it is possible.
The same registration terms and costs apply, including the option for bed, or drop bag, or no support at all.

18) Start List Order:

The order of riders in the registration list is set.
The field is limited to 49 riders, and there are still some available places left.
Once there are 49 registered riders - A waiting list will be created.
Another option is to ride in the Organizer's Ride, a week before, on 21/Oct/2014.

19) Brevet 200 In November:

One week after the 1200 km brevet, on Friday 7/Nov/2014,  there will be a brevet 200.
It will be in the northern part of Israel, a circular route around the Sea of Galilee, with very beautiful views.
The route is a bit lumpy, starting near Nazareth, going to the Sea of Galilee, passing near many early Christianity attractions (like Tabgha, Capernaum, Mount of Beatitudes, Bethsaida, etc.)
climbing to the Golan Heights, and Mount Gilboa.
There is no overlap between the route of this 200 km brevet and the 1200 km brevet.
Start time is 05:00 am from Afula.

This brevet will be part of the 2015 season, and could be used as one of the qualifiers for PBP 2015.

If you'd like to participate in this 200 km brevet - Please notify as soon as possible.

20) Pasta Dinner and BBQ:
There will be free pasta dinner before the ride, and a BBQ after the ride.
The pasta will be served at the start/finish location, from 2 hours before the ride starts.
The BBQ will be on the beach, 2 km north of the start/finish location.
Details will be available for the riders.

21) Social Networks:
If you want to use social networks, we suggest you use the hashtag #IL12CK (Israeli 12C (1200) K)
e.g. Twitter, Google Plus, Facebook, etc.
If you do use that, please do public posts, as not all people have an account in all (or any) of these networks...

I plan to use Twitter during the ride, mainly to update about the progress of the ride, so you may want to give my Twitter handle @IsraeliRando to your friends and family.

I will not use Twitter to update the riders during the ride. This will be done at Sde Boker, so make sure you check the Announcement Board when you're there.

Whenever you see #IL12CK (in real life while in Israel, that is...) you should know that it's related to this ride. Expect to see it on the vehicle that will carry your drop bags, in the hostel in Sde Boker, in the restaurant where we'll have our pre-ride mix, and where we'll have the post ride BBQ.
